As head of strategy, audio initiatives at Meta, Fred Beteille has plenty of opinions about that : “I think we’re at the beginning of a revolutionary phase in music, and elsewhere. Gaming and all sorts of other areas as well. But specifically music”. He encouraged the music industry to think hard about “the things that will bring people joy” in these new worlds, and work closely with artists to create them.

The music giant, which owns record labels Atlantic, Elektra, and Warner Records, among others, said in a press release that it would build a combined theme park and virtual concert venue in the Sandbox, a metaverse platform. The space will feature virtual concerts and musical experiences by the artists under the Warner Music Group umbrella. Warner said it considers itself a “first-mover” in the area of metaverse concerts, and in that sense it’s working hard to avoid repeating past mistakes.

Warner Music backs NFT project that aims to mint virtual superstars in the metaverse
A new metaverse project by Singapore-based Ownft World is using non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to create virtual celebrities that can appear in various digital media and tie a token’s value to an idol’s popularity. Called The Guardians of Fashion (GOF), the project will mint 6,888 NFTs for two-dimensional avatars based on human characteristics. As GOF’s first music partner, Warner Music will issue a virtual casting call to identify 100 GOF avatar talents for upcoming partnerships.

HitPiece, a new website trying to position itself as the place to buy music NFTs, has temporarily shuttered its digital doors after a flurry of outrage from artists and labels, who claimed the marketplace was selling their music without permission.
